“For such ones are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. Did not even Satan marvelously transform himself into an angel of light? Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves as ministers of righteousness, whose end shall be according to their works.” II Corinthians 11:13-15

A few nights ago, I sat down to watch a taped broadcast of TBN’s (Trinity Broadcasting Network) latest “Praise-a-Thon” that aired Sunday evening, April 5th, 2008. The cast of characters was a veritable “Who’s Who” of modern day word-faith teachers; Paul & Jan Crouch, Paul Crouch, Jr., Jesse Duplantis, Jamal H. Bryant, Steve Munsey, Donnie McClurkin, Judy Jacobs, Karen Wheaton & Chosen, HLE Singers & Actors, John Hagee, Nasir Siddiki, Dr. Mark Chironna, Steve Galiher and more.

As each droned on about the virtues of sowing seed faith money into their “ministry” efforts around the world – one man in particular, boasted of receiving a revelation from God. He described his private revelation as a “marrying together technology with theology” that was going to bring one of three popular social networks to a screeching halt.

"Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus." (2 Timothy 1:13)

When Paul wrote to his two young disciples, Timothy and Titus, he stressed again and again the vital importance of maintaining sound doctrine in their churches.

"If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome |same word as 'sound'| words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness" (1 Timothy 6:3; see also 1:10). "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine" (2 Timothy 4:3). "That he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers" (Titus 1:9). "But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine" (Titus 2:1; also Titus 2:8).

"And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come." (Luke 19:13)

This "parable of the pounds" indicated to His disciples that they should not wait idly for the second coming of Christ, thinking "that the kingdom of God should immediately appear" (Luke 19:11), but that they should stay busy, using whatever abilities and opportunities they had in the Lord's service until His return. The word "occupy" is an unusual word, the Greek pragmatenomai, from which we derive our modern word "pragmatic," meaning "practical," and it only occurs this one time in the New Testament.

There is another related word, however, also occurring only one time, in 2 Timothy 2:4. "No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier." Here the word "affairs" is the Greek pragmateia, and Paul is cautioning those who would be "good soldiers of Jesus Christ" against becoming involved in the pragmatic affairs of civilian or business life, if they would really be pleasing to their commanding officer.

Although our text for today appears in parentheses in the King James Bible, it is a most important concept in Scripture and is the summary of an extensive passage which precedes it. Beginning with II Corinthians 4:8, Paul continually contrasts the seen and the unseen, finishing up with the admonition to "walk by faith."

"We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed" (vv.8-9). Though we have trials on the outside, through faith we have inward triumph.

"Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus . . . that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh" (vv.10-11). Even though "death worketh in us," that same persecution results in "life in you" (v.12). Through faith we know "that He which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus" (v.14).

"Do ye thus requite the Lord, O foolish people and unwise? is not He thy father that hath bought thee? hath He not made thee, and established thee?" (Deuteronomy 32:6).

fool This rebuke was by Moses, as he warned the people of God just before their entrance into the Promised Land. It contains the first use of the Hebrew nabal (translated "fool" or "foolish") in the Bible. Here it is applied to God's chosen people after they had been redeemed out of Egyptian slavery by God. This implies that the most foolish of all people are those who have known about God and His great salvation and yet have turned away from His Word.

Paul writes in similar scathing terms of those who had known of God's great deliverance of their fathers from the evil world before the Flood, and yet then abandoned Him for idolatry. "When they knew God, . . . their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools" (Romans 1:21-22).

"What profit hath a man of all his labor which he taketh under the sun?" (Ecclesiastes 1:3)

This is the first of 29 occurrences of the striking phrase, "under the sun," found only in the Book of Ecclesiastes. The question it asks is a common age-long question, for "there is no new thing under the sun" (v. 9). A man works to eat so he can work again, and what's the purpose of it all?

And this question was asked, not by a day laborer who lived from hand to mouth, but by King Solomon, reputed to be the richest and wisest man of all the ages. He set about to try everything which might bring fulfillment. Here was his conclusion: "Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labor that I had labored to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun" (2:11).

"And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book." (Revelation 22:19)

This final testimony and warning of Christ to those who profess to be His followers is a clear command not to either augment (Revelation 22:18) or dilute the inspired "words" (not just "thoughts") of the Bible. There are many people in the various cults following some leader who think he or she has received some new inspired word from God. That is very unwise. But it is usually certain leaders in the mainline denominations who presumptuously either cull out or explain away those Bible verses they consider unscientific or offensive in some way. That is even more dangerous, for those whose names are not found "in the book of life" will be "cast into the lake of fire" (Revelation 20:15).

"For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain." (Philippians 1:21)

Although the glorious resurrection bodies which have been promised all believers must await the return of Christ, even the spirit-existence after death is better than this present life for the believer. Paul himself expressed "a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better" (v. 23)--"to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord" (2 Corinthians 5:8).

Thus, it is "gain" when a Christian dies! Since Christ, in His resurrection body, is in heaven at the right hand of the Father, the spirits of "sleeping" Christians are also there. The intermediate state is somewhat analogous to the dreaming state, in which the consciousness travels to various places and experiences while the body is asleep. In fact, death is called "sleep" for the Christian (1 Thessalonians 4:13).

"That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the Lord, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the Lord your God for ever" (Joshua 4:24).

redsea The testimony of Joshua to the children of Israel as they entered the promised land reminded them of the tremendous strength in the mighty hand of God whom they were to fear and trust forever. This is only one of about 20 references in the Scriptures to God's mighty hand. Moses had often recalled how "the Lord brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt" (Deuteronomy 7:8).

The first reference to God's mighty hand is in Jacob's dying prophecy concerning Joseph. "His bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob" (Genesis 49:24).

"I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one." (1 John 2:14)

There are two commendations about the "young men" (typically applied to those under forty) that John notes. They are "strong" (vigorious, healthy, both physically and mentally) and the word of God "abides" (remains, endures) in them. These are those who have come through their believing childhood, no doubt guided and counseled by the "fathers" in their lives, who are now active in the "good fight of faith" (1 Timothy 6:12).

Like Abraham, they are "strong in faith" (Romans 4:20), not staggering under the burden of unbelief. Like the leaders in the church at Rome, they are willing to "bear the infirmities of the weak" (Romans 15:1), and to be alert, standing "fast in the faith" (1 Corinthians 16:13). Even though they would have faced opposition from among professing Christians, they were "strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus" (2 Timothy 2:1).

"Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name." (Philippians 2:9)

There are three primary names for God used in the Old Testament: Elohim, Jehovah, and Adonai. In the New Testament, both Jehovah and Adonai are translated as "Lord" (Greek, kurios) and applied to Christ. This word is also applied occasionally to human "lords," but is specifically used as a name or title of God or Christ no less than 663 times.

His human name, of course, was Jesus ("Jehovah is Savior"), but this name is used by itself only 22 times in the epistles--always with special emphasis on His humanity. Although it was the common name used repeatedly in the gospel narratives, it is significant that the disciples and other believers almost always addressed Him personally as "Lord," never simply as "Jesus." Unbelievers and demons, on the other hand, never addressed Him as "Lord."

The principle expressed in this verse must be of paramount importance, for it is found repeated in one way or another, probably more often than any other single principle in the New Testament.
After a major scandal and dwindling crowds, the Lakeland Outpouring concluded.

The Lakeland Outpouring’s final meeting was held at Ignited Church - six months after Canadian evangelist Todd Bentley launched daily meetings in the small Lakeland, Florida, community and left without warning Aug. 11 in a cloud of scandal.

“None of us knew how long this would last,” said Ignited Church senior pastor Stephen Strader, who announced on a blog Oct. 2 that, with the outpouring ending, he intends to set up a global apostolic base in Lakeland. “Ignited Church has had a vision [for] an International Apostolic Center. The Lakeland Outpouring has catapulted our vision forward.”

Strader said with the support of “dozens of major leaders” for his apostolic center, he envisions a place for hosting conferences, special events and training workshops. He also announced the creation of Ignited Network of Ministries (INM), an initiative to connect Ignited Church with Lakeland-spawned revivals worldwide.

“But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who secretly will bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing on themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their pernicious ways, and because of them the way of truth will be evil spoken of. And through covetousness they will use you for gain with well-turned words; for whom judgment from of old does not linger, and their destruction does not sleep.” II Peter 2:1-3

Question:

I'm confused by a book that is very popular among my circle of Christian friends. It's titled The Shack, and although it is endorsed by some leading evangelicals, I was freaked out by it and couldn't actually finish it. I don't understand how anyone thinks he can put God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit in a fictional situation and then have them speak the words out of his own imagination. Isn't this dead wrong?

Response:

Yes. It's also blasphemy. Here is a definition of that word from Noah Webster's 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language:

"[It] is an injury offered to God, by denying that which is due and belonging to Him, or attributing to Him that which is not [true to] His nature."

"Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh." (James 3:12)

The answer to these rhetorical questions obviously is: "No." A fig tree cannot become an olive tree in one growing season, or in a million of them. Nor can a grapevine evolve into a fig tree, no matter what happens to it (grafts, mutations, chemicals, radiations, anything).

In the very first chapter of the Bible, each kind of plant God created was given the genetic information by its Maker to "reproduce" only its own "kind" of plant, not to diverge into some other kind, although its offspring could develop into many varieties of the parental kind (but even that only within strict limits). The same was true with the animals. Ten times in Genesis 1 God, in five verses, tells us that each created kind of plant and animal was coded to reproduce just its own kind (Genesis 1:11, 12, 21, 24, 25).
