“LOVE NEVER FAILS. But if there are prophecies, they will be abolished; if tongues, they shall cease; if knowledge, it will be abolished. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. BUT WHEN THAT WHICH IS PERFECT COMES,, then that WHICH IS IN PART will be caused to CEASE.” ~ I Corinthians 13:8-10

This group of verses represent yet another set of contrast; between that which is eternal (LOVE) and spiritual gifts which are not (prophecies, tongues and earthly knowledge). The key verse is verse ten; “but when that which is Perfect comes…”

There is coming a specific time when prophecies (which proclaim the testimony of Jesus as Messiah, Savior and King); tongues (which is the sharing of the Good News Gospel of Jesus Christ to a lost world); and knowledge (wisdom found in the understanding of the Law and the eternal will of God for mankind) will end! What is the event that causes these wonderful gifts from God to end?

Our answer is found a few more verses after:

“For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then FACE TO FACE…” ~ I Corinthians 13:12a!

Do you see it? Prophecy, tongues and knowledge all are temporary tools to proclaim the soon coming of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself as ruler of this world and indeed, the whole universe! And, we are going to see Him face to face!

Therefore, God is proclaimed as PERFECT (I Corinthians 13:10 & Matthew 5:48) and LOVE (I John 4:8).

Here is one more verse for you to ponder:

“And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. GOD IS LOVE; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him!”
