The Comfortable Church
"Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked" (Revelation 3:17).
This is the heart of Christ’s rebuke of the church at Laodicea, the "lukewarm" church (v.16) of the last days. This is an evangelical church for its candlestick is still in place (note Revelation 1:20; 2:5), but it has become a neutral church, "neither cold nor hot" (3:15). The reason for its tepid witness is because it has become "rich and increased with goods," comfortable in a culture which tends to equate material prosperity with success and God’s favor. It may have acquired large and beautiful facilities, developed special programs of many kinds, featured a variety of musicians and other artists, and even gained a measure of political power. Yet, Christ calls it poor and blind and naked!
Not all large churches become like this, of course, but it is always a real danger. The desire for large congregations can easily lead to compromising Biblical standards of doctrine and practice. "Woe to them that are at ease in Zion," the prophet warned (Amos 6:1).
Note that the Lord began His letter to the Laodicean church by identifying Himself as "the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God" (Revelation 3:14). This strongly suggests that a major reason for the development of such complacency in a large church (or a small church, for that matter) is neglect of these three doctrines-the sufficiency of Christ, the inerrant authority of God’s Word, and the special creation of all things by God.
The letter to this church ends with the sad picture of Christ standing at its door, seeking admission (v.20). "He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches" (v.22)

Christian Identity – Part VI – The Believers Power

Indeed, those promises involve “all things that pertain to life and godliness.” We see the results of the power of God in our lives when our characters reflect “all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness” (Colossians 1:11).

But perhaps the most tragic case is the church in Laodicea. This church represents all those outwardly prosperous evangelical churches that attempt to take a neutral stance on the basic conflicts of the last days. The one who is “the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God” (Revelation 3:14) will pronounce the awful judgment.

This one-chapter epistle of Paul to his friend Philemon is essentially a personal request by Paul that Philemon forgive his runaway slave, Onesimus, and receive him back into “the church in thy house” as a new Christian, recently won to Christ

Sacramentalism, which is the heart of Roman Catholicism – the belief that liturgy’s form and formulas transmit spiritual power and that salvation comes through the sacraments – too readily creeps into Protestant thinking as well.
(Many Protestants still believe that baptism saves, taking the bread and cup brings life, etc.)
Alas, we are all Eve’s children by nature and still prone to follow the ways of Cain and Babel. Every place of worship, Catholic or Protestant, which has been adorned for the purpose of hallowing it or gaining God’s favor or making worship more acceptable, violates Exodus 20:24-26 as well as the rest of Scripture.
All such “sanctuaries” are monuments to man’s rebellion and his proud and perverted religion of self-effort. Unfortunately, it is all too easy to fall into the error of imagining that belonging to a church and periodically “worshiping” in its “sanctuary” makes one a Christian and compensates for one’s lack of consistent, personal holiness.

“And all who believed were together and had all things common. And they sold their possessions and goods and distributed them to all, according as anyone had need. And continuing with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they shared food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.” Acts 2:44-47
These scriptures describe, in a beautifully simplistic way, the attitude, atmosphere and approval of true fellowship amongst Christians who gather in the name of Jesus Christ.

“Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him (Jesus Christ), Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands? He (Jesus Christ) answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.” Mark 7:5-9

“I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; or kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.” I Timothy 2:1-6

My sister, who was helping with the inaugural “Ex-Catholics For Christ Conference”, met a friend while shopping. The conversation got around to what my sister was doing, and her friend, an evangelical, was dismayed that there would be such a conference. “After all,” she explained, “my sister-in-law is a Catholic and she’s saved. She has no intention of leaving the Catholic Church because that’s where she’s comfortable.” It seems that this lady and her sister-in-law are uninformed concerning what the Bible teaches, or the Catholic faith, or perhaps both. They have a great deal of company among evangelicals who are asking: “Does it really matter?” and “Isn’t TBC (The Berean Call) engaged at times in nothing more than veiled Catholic bashing?”
One of the most frustrating aspects of addressing the “Roman Catholic gospel” is the prevailing ignorance regarding what Catholicism actually teaches. Most evangelicals are clueless regarding Catholicism. And many practicing Catholics (including a surprisingly high number of priests and nuns) simply do not know the actual extent of the salvation requirements of their Church. Surveys of Catholics reveal the common understanding about attaining heaven: that it centers around doing works which are pleasing to God (i.e., living one’s life as a basically good person), performing a preponderance of good deeds to outweigh the bad, and living up to most of what the Church teaches. Nearly all Catholics believe this affords them the best chance for getting to heaven. However, this hope falls far short of what their Church officially requires.

“By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.” (Hebrews 13:15)
Unique to the United States is the national holiday Thanksgiving. We are encouraged to recognize the bounty and wonder of our land, and express gratitude in some formal way.
In many homes, however, thanks have become a vague expression of happiness for prosperity rather than a “sacrifice of praise” to our El Shaddai.
This is the natural man’s character and is temporal, oft times self-centered.
Unique the the Christian Church however, we are told to,
“…cry out with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of your wonderful works.” Psalm 26:7
Not only by our outward expression of voice to offer thanks, but with song too.
“I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify Him with thanksgiving.” Psalm 69:30
When we come before our God of grace to offer our thanks to Him, we remember that we are spiritually approaching the very One who sustains us in the day to day and for eternity through the death, resurrection and promise of salvation wrought by God the Son Himself, Jesus Christ.

“Jefferson viewed the “wall” as limiting the federal government from “intermeddling” in church government, as explained in his letter to Samuel Miller, Jan. 23, 1808:
I consider the government of the United States as interdicted [prohibited] by the Constitution from intermeddling with religious institutions, their doctrines, discipline, or exercises. This results not only from the provision that no law shall be made respecting the establishment or free exercise of religion, but from that also which reserves to the states the powers not delegated to the United States [10th Amendment].”

“I don’t get you people,” the young lady complained. “I’m a Roman Catholic who was placed on your newsletter list, no doubt by one of my well-meaning Protestant friends. Some of the stuff you write is interesting, if not worthwhile, but I’m sick and tired of your continually picking on my Church! We love Jesus just as much as any of you non-Catholics. And why are you promoting Ex-Catholics For Christ? Why don’t you push ex-Baptists, ex-Methodists, or ex-Presbyterians for Christ? Quit attacking us Catholics!!”
We receive a few such letters from Roman Catholics voicing their objections to what we write about their Church’s beliefs and practices. That neither greatly surprises nor disturbs us. It is disheartening, however, to hear from an increasing number of professing evangelicals who are just as critical of our “attacking Catholic brothers and sisters in Christ.” Even some of our longtime readers wonder why at times we seem to be “so preoccupied” with Roman Catholicism.
As many of you know, TBC (The Berean Call) is a ministry actively concerned about trends, movements, events, organizations, influential church personalities, teachings, practices, etc., which adversely affect the body of Christ. Our bottom-line evaluation of any teaching or practice is simply: Is it biblical? (Isaiah 8:20; Acts 17:11). This is what God has called us to do, as well as to exhort believers in Christ to grow in personal discernment, that they may be encouraged to test all things by the Scriptures (2 Corinthians 13:5; 1 Thessalonians 5:21).

I so agree. Mega churches do have a lot going for them, but when you look deeper there is a lot missing. I left a prosperous mega church for a number of reasons.
New believers are not getting the right food and older believers are being spiritually starved from shallow teachings. And boy, I can get on a soap box about the 'seeker friendly' aspect. Thanks for bringing out truths about this subject.
