Shew Thyself a Man
“Now the days of David drew nigh that he should die; and he charged Solomon his son, saying, I go the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man;” I Kings 2:1-2
The words of a Christian man spoken in his last days on this earth can be some of the most powerful counsel given. Such was the case of King David. Shortly before his falling asleep in the Lord, David summoned his son, Solomon, to his bedside. What he shared with his dear son back then, speaks to the hearts of every Christian man today.
David commanded Solomon to “Shew thyself a man.” (I Kings 2:2)
How then, was Solomon to accomplish such a command given to him by his Godly father? King David spelled it out clearly in the next two verses:
“And keep the charge of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself: That the LORD may continue his word which he spake concerning me, saying, If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail thee (said he) a man on the throne of Israel.” I Kings 2:3-4
Inspired by the Holy Spirit (II Samuel 23:1-2), David explains that a man who will show himself a “real man” is one who centers everything on his relationship to God and God’s relationship to him! The expected result of centering one’s life totally on God’s ways, statutes, commands, judgments and testimonies is that the Lord will then, show favor upon that man!
Secondly, a man who truly seeks God with all that he is (verse 3) will then know how to lead his family too! (verse 4)
Is God challenging you to “shew yourself a man” today? Begin by heeding the counsel of King David to his son, King Solomon – the wisest man who ever lived.
