The Genesis Gospel According to Moses
“And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head and thou shalt bruise his heel.” (Genesis 3:9-15
Driven by the Holy Spirit, God instructed Moses to pen the Book of Genesis and specifically, our scripture text revealing the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
“This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear. This is he, that was in the assembly in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the Mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:” Acts 7:37-38
God Confronts Adam Directly -
Notice that God spoke directly to Adam – asking him three distinct questions related to his conduct before God:
- Where are YOU? (Genesis 3:9)
- Who told YOU that you were naked? (Genesis 3:11)
- Have YOU eaten of the tree…? (Genesis 3:11)
Adam thought it better to blame someone else than admit his own willful disobedience to God’s commands. We are the same way – attempting to justify our evil actions by leveling blame on a someone or something else in the flawed hope that God won’t notice. What excuse did Adam give for his sin? Blame Eve of course! (Genesis 3:12)
God Confronts Eve Directly -
God then turns to Eve and confronts her. Notice that our Lord God asked her but one question:
“What have you done?” (Genesis 3:13)
Eve could have and should have admitted her guilt immediately but, true to her (and our) sin nature, proceeded to blame the serpent who tricked her. (Genesis 3:13) This is the proverbial, “The Devil made me do it!”
Tragically, Eve was standing right alongside Adam when our Lord God confronted them concerning their rebellion. She heard her husband lie directly to our Lord God and then turn and throw her under the bus too! Knowing these things, Eve should have done the opposite and simply admitted her guilt before the very One who knows all things! (Hebrews 4:13) Did she? No. She blamed the serpent instead. She did no better than her husband before God. (Genesis 3:13)
God Confronts the Serpent Directly -
Our Lord God confronts the serpent and pronounces His judgment:
- Reveals the serpent’s intention to cause Adam and Eve to sin. (Genesis 3:14)
- Pronounces an earthly curse upon the serpent, a curse with spiritual implications to it. (Genesis 3:14) When cattle or beast of the field encounter snakes in the wild – fear is struck in that animal’s heart – a fear of death! So too, because of the ongoing seduction of Satan, men fear death also. (Hebrews 2:14-15)
How fascinating it is to observe the serpent’s silence before God Almighty! The serpent spoke freely to Eve. It became quite another matter when the serpent was confronted by the Holy One Himself, Jesus Christ!
“For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” Hebrews 10:30-31
God Confronts Satan Directly -
One of the more remarkable verses in all of God’s Word is found here:
“And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” (Genesis 3:15)
There are four profound applications to this scripture – each directly related to the coming of Jesus Christ and the revealing purpose of His Gospel to mankind:
- I (Lord God) will put enmity between thee (Satan) and the woman (Eve).
- …between thy seed (everyone who rejects Jesus Christ are the children of the father of lies – see John 8:41-45) and her seed (all who, by faith, follow after the Son of God, our Lord Jesus Christ – see Romans 4:11-18)
- …it (the work that is finished by Jesus Christ on the cross – see Luke John 4:34; Luke 22:42; John 6:38; John 6:40; John 19:30) shall bruise thy head (Jesus Christ resurrection crushing Satan’s plans to seduce mankind into following him versus God – see I John 5:13)
- …and thou (Satan) shalt bruise (the cross) his heel. (the physical death of Jesus Christ was temporary, not permanent! Matthew 12:40; Matthew 26:61; Matthew 27:40; Mark 8:31; Acts 10:38-41)
God Confronts Mankind Directly -
Adam and Eve chose to blame their willful disobedience on each other or the devil. Their weak attempts at justifying themselves before God provokes this warning to mankind who come after them:
“If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.” I John 1:10
Though Satan bruised Jesus Christ at the cross (Genesis 3:15a), it was Jesus Christ who defeated Satan by taking away the consequences of sin (Genesis 3:15b) by His resurrection three days later!
“O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” I Corinthians 15:55-57
Are you troubled by the specter of death? Adam’s disobedience is why all are separated from God and face eternal damnation. But through Jesus Christ – death can be overcome – if you will only believe!
“Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.” John 14:7
